The Parkside School presents:

Transitions: Parenting a Child with Disabilities

Wednesday, February 6, 2008
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Speaker: Nancy Crown, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Manhattan. She is also the parent of a 22 year-old daughter on the autistic spectrum. Dr. Crown is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and on the faculty of the Child Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program of the William Alanson White Institute. She has consulted and presented on the topic of Autistic Spectrum Disorders in a variety of settings.

This lecture traces the developmental path of parents of children with disabilities. Dr. Crown’s presentation describes parents’ experiences from the time their children first begin to manifest developmental differences or difficulties, and into early adulthood. The talk discusses the challenges that families of children with any sort of significant difference may face, as well as some of the unexpected rewards. Drawing from both personal and professional experience, as well as from literature, Dr. Crown describes issues families grapple with on this journey.
